HBR heads to Spruce Meadows

Spruce Meadows, located in Calgary Alberta, the name that likely every person in the horse world has heard of. It has been watched on TV, visited, written, talked, dreamed, read and wondered about for 47 years! All the reasons we were ecstatic when our HBR Trailer was invited to attend “The Masters” this past September. It was an honor to say the least.

A question we have heard yearly since the beginning of Hairy Back Ranch in 2012, “Are you going to Spruce Meadows this year?” The truth was it just wasn’t in the cards for us. With a large family, kids and a farm there was just too much going on at that time to go away. Well, this year was different…so much different!!

We originally asked to attend next years show, but were thrilled when the reply came from Spruce asking if we would like to attend this years? Finally, after 10 years, our answer was a resounding YES!

With only 25 days to prepare we needed to make a list! I love lists, striking a line through each item when its done… ahhhh so rewarding.

Straight to work we went cleaning and filling the trailer, time was ticking. The hardest thing to know about a new destination is how much of everything to bring. When departure day arrived, we took a final peek, closed the door and away we went.

Arrival and set up were a breeze. The simplicity of a trailer is just that, you basically drive in, park and open the door. Once we handled the basic set up and knew we were ready to open the next day…now we could take a walk and really have a look at this amazing place. I am confident to say I now understand all the excitement behind people’s stories of attending any event at Spruce Meadows as it is truly a beautiful destination.

Spruce Meadows - 3

We walked from one end to the other…gorgeous arenas with perfectly manicured grass, significant jumps, stunning flowers and of course amazing seating, lots and lots of seating. Many even bring their favorite chair to sit on the grass with camera in hand to watch and photograph the most exciting jumping you may ever see. For many years it has been cared for and expanded to grow with the ever-changing needs of a world-class show facility and continues to awe the crowd year after year.

As each of the five beautiful sun shining days passed, we were thrilled to meet people from all over the world. The USA, Europe and of course from all over Canada. Once again, meeting people was one of the many highlights. From trail riders to show jumpers, Spruce attracts everyone, all for the love of horses.

Throughout the weekend I took some time to watch a jumping event, I have seen some on TV before, but nothing like this. As I stood in awe… all the descriptions I had heard from others came to reality…it was breathtaking.

The hush of the crowd as each pair sailed over a jump. Is it even possible to hear a hush, maybe not, but I could sure feel it. The entire event was captivating from start to finish.

Spruce Meadows - 2

As the final day came to a close, the winners were named, and it was time for everyone to move on. Some would load up their trailer and drive to their next show, others would load up on planes and fly home with their horses. As for us, we closed our door, hooked up the truck and trailer, and headed home.

Now we can say, Yes, yes indeed we have been to Spruce Meadows. (…and it was awesome) 💛
